XXI Century
The Alcântara XXI urban study will be developed over 43 hectares by four architects: Frederico Valsassina and Manuel Aires Mateus, Mário Sua Kay (who replaces Siza Vieira and his famous towers) and Jean Nouvel. Valsassina and Aires Mateus have the old Mirandela and Pinhol sites and the Carris facilities in their hands, and propose the creation of eight-storey buildings for housing, offices and commerce and a transport interface linking Carris, the Metro and Comboios de Portugal.

The two architects also foresee some road changes with the creation of new streets. Sua Kay is continuing with Nova Alcântara, which at this stage includes the construction of four six-storey office buildings on Avenida da Índia and the restoration of the Sidul refinery building. Also planned is the restoration of the old Bernardo Daupiás textile factory, which will house a day care center, an ATL (free time workshop) and a senior citizens' center.

On April 28, 2008, the current government officially presented the "Nova Alcântara" plan. This plan aims to increase the capacity of the Container Terminal and provide a tunnel rail link between the Cascais line and the belt line. This connection would allow direct trains between the Cascais line and stations such as Entre Campos and facilitate the transportation of goods from the Port of Lisbon. Due to the international crisis, the project has been shelved, although the Lisbon Metro plans to continue the Yellow Line to Alcântara.

Night center
Alcântara is currently one of the main nightlife centers in the Portuguese capital. The Docas de Alcântara and the many nightclubs, which are scattered around the old factories, are one of the attractions for the city's inhabitants and tourists.
